Item3.....Wooden Toothpicks
Item4.....Air Hardening Modeling Clay
Item5.....Florist Green Foam.
Item6.....Natural Woven Basket. The picture shown on the top uses 8inch (Dia) x 3.5inch (Height) woven basket.
Item7.....Artificial Leaves (green color). You can try to get this from amazon or from your local art store.
Once you have completed collecting all the 7 items described above, you can start to build your flower basket.
To explain briefly, use the modeling clay to make the flowers as explained below and support them with the wooden toothpicks. Once the clay dries start to color the flowers and let them dry again. Sometimes you may need to apply two coatings of paint to get the necessary color depth. place or insert the toothpicks on small pieces of green florist foam and spread them into the flower basket. Now fill the basket with artificial leaves. finally paint the exposed portions of the top surface of the foam, so that it matches with the color of the surrounding leaves.
Step2: Modeling 5 different Flowers with Clay.
Look at the figure shown below explaining 5 different kinds of artificial clay modelled flowers. We will teach you on how to make these 5 different kinds of flowers next.
Flower 1:
a.....First take a small amount of white modeling clay and shape into a thin lengthy oval shaped structure as shown on the left side picture. Let's call this as the flower bud.
b.....Insert the flat/blunt end of the tooth pick to one side of the flower bud and apply little glue to the interface. Using the sharp end of another tooth pick make dots on the flower bud to make it look more real. Let this arrangement rest aside.
c.....Make a flat thin circular pattern (like a pan cake) on a flat surface with modelling clay. Cut out a pattern in the shape of a leaf and draw lines showing the leaf spines on the clay leaf model as shown on the picture. Apply glue to the bottom end of the leaf as shown.
d.....Join both the leaf and the bud to form flower one when the glue and clay is still wet. Now let this arrangement dry. you can insert the sharp end of the tooth pick in to a square piece of foam for support till this clay model dries. The drying process might take approximately 12 hours.
e.....Color the flower as you wish. Sometimes, you may have to go through double coating to get the required color depth.
Flower 2:
a.....Create a bud shapped pattern with modeling clay. Attach this to the tooth pick and apply glue on the clay-toothpick interface. Let this arrangement rest aside for a while.
b......Create two thin circular patterns on a flat surface like pan cakes and cut out two leaf shaped clay models.
c.....Attach the bud and the two leaves as shown in the figure on the left. Apply glue to the interface and let this model dry for the next 12 hours.
d.....Draw lines to reflect leaf spines if you wish to make the leaves look more natural.
e....Color the flower as you wish. Sometimes, you may have to go through double coating to get the required color depth.
f....There are two different kinds of flowers that can be made with this technique as shown in the picture above.
Flower 3:
a.....Take a small amount of white modeling clay and shape into a thin lengthy oval shaped structure as shown on the left side picture.
b.....Using a scissor, cut one half of the bud in to 5 segments as shown on the picture. This structure will end up looking like a squid.
c.....Make the five segments smooth so that you can get rid of all the roughness resulted from the cutting process.
d.....Attach the bottom end of the model to the wooden toothpick and apply glue on the interface.
e.....Let this model dry for 12 hours. Color this flower with color of your choice.
Flower 4:
a.....Make a oval shaped lengthy thin/flat pattern with modeling clay as shown in the picture step 1.
b.....Cut out a lengthy pattern as shown in picture step 2 as shown. Make sure you do not cut all the way across the clay model when you cut the finger like design pattern.
c.....Apply glue to one end of the finger like model as shown in step 3 picture.
d.....Roll down the clay model into a spiral shaped flower as shown in step 4 picture. This is a little tricky one to do.
e.....Attach the toothpick to the flower model base with little clay if required and apply glue.
f.....Let this model dry for atleast 12 hours.
g.....Apply color of your choice to the flower model.
Step 3: Arranging The Flower Basket
Make as many varieties of flowers as you need to make your flower basket look more beautiful and colorful. Insert the flowers using the sharp end of the toothpick in bunches on small pieces of green foam as shown in the picture below. Place them on the flower basket along with the artificial leaves.
Step 4: Finishing Touch
This is a very important step in this whole project. First trim all the artificial leaves that projects out of the basket to make it look more professional. Finally color the top portions of the foam that is visible outside with either dark green color or with colors that match the color of the artificial leaves.
Step 5: Wrap And Display (or Gift)
Now you can use a transparent plastic sheet to cover the top portion of the basket, so that the flowers and artificial leaves stay within the basket. Alternatively you can use green colored pins to attach the leaves and foam to the walls of the flower basket.
You are done. Display this colorful flower basket anywhere you like. Enjoy.
