Dealing with Spywares and Malwares on your home PC:

It is an inevitable truth, that everyone has come across spywares and malwares. If not on your computer, atleast on some of your friends computers having frequent pop up ads on their system without their knowledge. Most people doesn't spend enough time to remove these spywares. Spywares and Malwares are nothing but unwanted programs on your system. They target on collecting information about your system, daily internet activities, some of then even go to the extent of collecting your personal information. The worst case is when the spywares highjack (take control) of your system. So it is necessary to maintain some form of defense on your system against these spywares and malwares. The defense can be either software based (automatic) or hardware based (semi-automatic). We will discuss about both the methods here, with an example on how to remove the most famous malware
Antivirus Pro 2010.

Semi-Automatic Method:

This is a beautiful method to kill all the pop up ads that may contain spywares and malwares. We have come across websites that have numerous pop up ads with built in spywares and malwares on them. It is advisable to avoid these sites. But if you still want to see the content on them, then the best way to maintain control on these types of websites, is to use the content advisor on windows explorer. Many people do not use this feature because either they do not know how to use them or they are unaware of its presence. There may be similar features on other web browsers too, but we will cover only windows explorer browser features here.

Content Advisor for pop up Ads:

You can configure the content advisor with different restriction levels. Once it is configured and password protected, then no pop up ads are allowed to be displayed without your approval. The methods to enable and use content advisor is explained below. It is advisable to maintain a very simple password with a single letter and use the same letter as the passoword hint to lower your frustration while surfing the internet. To enable the content advisor, follow the methods explained below.

Under the tools menu, select the Internet options menu. Now select the content tab. On this tab select the content advisor settings. If you are a parent and would like to restrict the usage of internet for your kids, you can implement the parental controls here.

You can go through all the various options on this screen. Under the ratings tab, maintain the rating to None and under the General tab check "Supervisor can type a password to allow users to view restricted content" button. Now you should set a password for the supervisor. Set simple passwords. In this example, the password is set to letter "s". We also used the same letter as the password hint.

Note: Content Advisor will ask you to enter your password before enabling the content advisor. Once it is enabled, you will get a screen conforming that it is enabled.

Now try to get into any website. If you know of some websites with vigorous pop up ads, then try that one and see for yourself the control you have on pop up ads. None of the pop up ads can pass through without your supervisor password. You will get a screen similar to the one shown on the left. The example on the left shows how content advisor blocked one of the pop up ads. The add basically needs supervisor permission to get displayed. You can use this technique especially when you enter suspicious websites.

To stop the pop up ads just click the cancel button.

The above explained method is effective, but only upto a certain extent. If you need some realtime protection, then you will need a software capable of protecting you real time. Some example softwares are McAfee, Norton, etc. If you are looking for some free softwares, then try the following.

This is a very popular and effective award winning software against both spywares and malwares.

Spyware doctor is very good at protecting your computer against online threats during surfing.

These free softwares will do most of the work for you once you install them. These softwares are recommended, since they are from trusted sources. Installing all the three doesn't hurt in anyway. You can schedule spyware doctor to scan your computer atleast once a day and on rebooting. You will be surprised to see the spywares this software finds after each time you browse the internet. This shows how much spyware is floating aroung on the internet without your knowledge.
